TWO NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNERS

We will celebrate the accomplishments of these two individuals on August 26 at 6:00PM at the Smith County Ag Center.

1871-1955

CORDELL HULL

  • Born in 1871 in a log cabin in Byrdstown TN

  • Chair of Clay County Democratic Party at age 19

  • Received law degree from Cumberland University

  • Veteran of Spanish American War - 4th Regiment of Tennessee Volunteer Infantry

  • Appointed Judge of 54th Judicial District of Tennessee

  • Elected Tennessee State House of Representatives 40th District

  • Chairman of Democratic National Committee

  • Longest serving Secretary of State under Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman during World War II

  • Referred to as the Father of the United Nations

  • Authorized the federal income tax

  • Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945

1948-Present

AL GORE, JR.

  • Born 1948 in Washington D.C. where his father served as U.S. House of Representative from Tennessee

  • Grew up on the Gore family farm where he still resides in Carthage as well as Nashville

  • Graduated from Harvard University

  • Vietnam veteran as a journalist from 1969 to 1971

  • Attended Vanderbilt University Divinity School and Law School​​

  • Author of "Earth in Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit"

  • U.S. Senator

  • Vice President

  • Won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote in 2000

  • Academy Aware winner for his documentary "An Inconvenient Truth"

  • Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007
